Dermoid Cyst Newport Beach
A dermoid cyst is usually a congenital, small lump located above the lateral brow or midline between the eyebrows. For a midline dermoid cyst, a CT scan is recommended to rule out any connection intra-cranially to the brain. If an intra-cranial connection is found, removal of the dermoid cyst is performed in conjunction with a pediatric neurosurgeon.
For the lateral brow dermoid cyst, surgical removal of the cyst is recommended during the first two years of life, to minimize any bone erosion to the frontal bone. During surgery, an incision is made in the lateral upper lid crease to camouflage the scar. The cyst wall needs to be completely removed during the surgery to prevent recurrence of the dermoid cyst.
For most children, the removal of dermoid cysts can be done as an outpatient surgery. As a fellowship trained plastic surgeon in both craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery, Dr. Chen has received additional specialized training in the surgical removal of dermoid cysts and aesthetic closure of the wound in pediatric patients.
